14 Aug Westbrook Academy Celebrates First Day of School with Surprise Visit from Russell Westbrook!
Westbrook Academy kicked off the new school year with an exciting visit from Russell Westbrook himself. This is Westbrook Academy’s second year at the new campus site in South Gate, Los Angeles, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome our students back for a year of learning, growth, and fun. Russell Westbrook and the Why Not Foundation helped us kick-start the fun with activities, snacks, and a challenge for the new year.
At the morning assembly, Russell gave students an inspiring message about trying new things and reaching new goals. He invited the students to ask themselves “WHY NOT”, his signature message about achieving big things and aiming as high as possible. Russell encouraged the students to write their own “WHY NOT” challenge for the year.
Lots of students wrote that they wanted to get better grades in math or science, or get into their college of choice. Many wanted to make a new friend, try something new, or make their parents proud! It was a great exercise in goal setting – thank you to the Why Not Foundation for providing the board.
After the assembly, Russell joined in for a spirited students vs. teachers basketball shoot-off. Game on!
Once students were back in class, Russell surprised classes by popping in and talking with the students about their hopes for the new school year.
It was a great day made extra special by the guy who makes this all possible! Thanks so much to Russell Westbrook and the Why Not Foundation for starting off the school year with fun, excitement, and encouragement.
