Westbrook Academy, operated by LA Promise Fund, hosted its first-ever Wildcat Girls Flag Football Tournament on May 3rd in partnership with East Los Angeles College. The inaugural girls’ flag football tournament was held to recognize women’s flag football’s newly-found status as a collegiate sport by the NCAA. To celebrate and increase participation in the sport, LA Promise Fund partnered with LA Chargers wide receiver Quentin Johnston, sports influencer and Founder of Game ChangeHER Jenna Bandy, and celebrity trainer Corey Calliet to mentor the athletes, host a skills clinic, and cheer on the teams throughout the tournament.

The tournament at ELAC’s Weingart Stadium started with opening remarks from Chief of Schools Jason Marin and ELAC President Dr. Monte Perez, followed by inspiring words from Johnston, Bandy, and Calliet.

“Being here today and watching these young athletes compete reminds me of the power of opportunity,” said Johnston. “LA Promise Fund’s commitment to empower young people through education, mentorship, and opportunity aligns with my values. If I can play even a small part in inspiring the next generation, then I’m doing something meaningful.”

Seven schools and teams participated in the tournament, including Westbrook Academy, which faced off against teams from across Los Angeles County: Maywood Academy, Franklin High School, Warren High School, Roosevelt High School, and Thomas Jefferson High School. Synergy Academy also joined the event to participate in a boys’ flag football skills clinic.

After a competitive string of matches, the Westbrook Wildcats persevered as a newly formed team to succeed in securing third place overall in the tournament.

The tournament was hosted as part of a significant milestone in women’s sports for East Los Angeles College and the city of Los Angeles, as women’s flag football sees increased representation ahead of the 2028 Olympics. ELAC is dedicated to increasing opportunities for female athletes, and women’s flag football will be added to their roster of teams in Spring 2026.

This event was made possible by partners, including the Why Not? Foundation and East Los Angeles College.
