PST ART Community Showcase: Celebrating Student Creativity at the Intersection of Art and Science

On a vibrant day at Getty’s Harold M. Williams Auditorium – filled to capacity with over 500 proud parents, students, educators, and community members – the PST ART Community Showcase brought the transformative power of art to center stage. Organized by LA Promise Fund with support from the Getty Foundation and Getty trustees, this event marked the culmination of a countywide educational initiative that invited young artists to explore the powerful connections between art, science, and social change.

The showcase was inspired by PST ART: Art & Science Collide, a landmark Getty initiative spotlighting exhibitions throughout Southern California. Through the LA Promise Fund’s ArtsMatter program, students from elementary to high school levels engaged in field trips, teacher-guided classroom projects, and interdisciplinary learning experiences that brought these themes to life.

Heather MacDonald, Senior Program Officer at the Getty Foundation, addressed students and families in attendance, celebrating the incredible range of talent and thought-provoking creativity on display. Among the many highlights, students from Vista Murrieta High School proudly posed for a group photo after presenting their artwork, while Westbrook Academy students garnered rave reviews for their film “Colors: A South Central Perspective.”

The auditorium came alive as Dorsey High School students performed “Conversations Through Color,” a dynamic dance choreographed by Juquari Baskin in response to the essential question: How do we see and understand the meaning of color? The performance captivated the audience and underscored the showcase’s mission to explore art through deep, personal, and cultural lenses.

One of the most touching moments came when a proud student and her mother shared a heartfelt celebration in front of the digital pop-up gallery, a reminder of the lasting impact of arts education on families and communities.

Councilwoman Heather Hutt joined in honoring Dorsey High students and the many other participants who made the event unforgettable. The showcase not only highlighted student excellence but also demonstrated how programs like ArtsMatter are forging pathways for young people into LA’s creative economy – empowering teachers, energizing classrooms, and connecting learning with real-world relevance.
