Director of Parent Engagement
Monica Cardona works directly with the parents, students, and community of all LA Promise Fund schools to facilitate a process in which parents are true advocates for their children and themselves. Cardona joined the organization as a Program Assistant in July of 2007. She became interested in education after working as a staff member at Manual Arts High School. While at Manual Arts, she developed and coordinated tutoring programs for at-risk youth and worked closely with Title I to ensure students were informed and received the services they were eligible for. She was one of the founding staff members during the opening of West Adams Prep and helped with the establishment and inauguration of the West Adams Prep Parent and Community Center.
Cardona is a graduate of Manual Arts High School. Her future plans are to obtain a counseling degree. She plans to work as a counselor and continue to strengthen and give back to her community.
Cardona’s favorite books are Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom and Juventud en Estasis by Carlos Cuauhtémoc Sanchez. She enjoys spending time with family and friends, cooking and hiking.
“I work at West Adams Prep because I believe that there has been a communication gap between the school and families. As a parent of a child in the Los Angeles Unified School District and as a former student of the same system, I feel that working at LA Promise Fund provides me with a unique opportunity to create the information pipeline parents and the community need to access the programs and services the school and our partner organizations have to offer.” – Monica Cardona
