ABE Distribution Center Site Coordinator & Lab Technician, CSU Channel Islands
ABE-LA Workshop Presenter

Since 2013, Carol Fujita has maintained the center’s biotechnology equipment kits and prepared all the reagents and supplies used by the participating schools and teachers. She is also in charge of the site scheduling and direct contact/communication with teachers. In addition, Fujita leads the ABE science out-reach activities with California State University-Channel Islands and California Lutheran University. Fujita has been an ABE-LA workshop presenter since 2009, and is currently lead presenter for the program’s Professional Development Teacher Training Workshops, where she hosts both 5-day and 2-day professional workshops for area teachers.

Fujita retired in 2009 after 26 years teaching Biology, Introductory Physical Science, and Health in the Oxnard Union High School District. She integrated the ABE Program labs into the biology curriculum for many years as a means of bringing hands-on, real-world biotechnology to her students. During her tenure, she held various positions including Science Department Chair, OUHSD Biology Curriculum Development Committee, Biology Benchmark Test Development, and OUHSD Peer Assistance and Review Committee.

Fujita earned a BA in Biology and a Life Single Subject Clear Teaching Credential from California State University, Northridge. One of the highlights of her teaching career was being named a recipient of the 2002 Amgen Award for Science Teaching Excellence. She strongly believes that ABE’s goal of providing hands-on science laboratory experiences to ALL students, leads to more students believing in themselves and pursuing science pathways in education and careers.
