Alex Karas


Director of Arts Programs

Alex Karas is the Director of Arts Programs at the LA Promise Fund where he oversees ArtsMatter, LAPF’s arts education initiative serving LA County students and teachers. Karas has focused his work in the field of media arts education through his leadership of a multi-year pilot program funded by the U.S. Department of Education: Media ArtsMatter. He has also directed school-based projects with Paramount Animation and Film Independent and led the Getty’s Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA Education Program.

Before joining LAPF in 2016, Karas worked as a program manager at Point Foundation and as a PreK-8 visual arts teacher in Chicago Public Schools. He also trains K-12 teachers on implementing visual art curricula and digital platforms in the classroom as a consultant for Davis Publication.

Karas holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Art Education from the University of Dayton and a Master’s of Arts in Teaching and Learning from Roosevelt University.

His favorite books are Middlesex and A Little Life. He enjoys crossword puzzles and tuna sandwiches.
