2024 ArtsMatter Professional Development Symposium: PST ART: Art & Science Collide

2024 ArtsMatter Professional Development Symposium: PST ART: Art & Science Collide

This summer, LA Promise Fund held our second annual ArtsMatter Professional Development Symposium on August 5th and 6th in collaboration with Getty’s PST ART and LAUSD. The two-day event, held at the California Science Center, was hosted by Emmy Award-winning journalist Wendy Burch and featured special guest speakers, including LAUSD Superintendent Alberto Carvalho and renowned Zapotec American Textile Artist Porfirio Gutiérrez.

More than 500 educators participated in more than 100 workshops led by exceptional artists and industry professionals from non-profit organizations, universities, and institutions from across the Greater LA region. We were grateful to have presenters from the J Paul Getty Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), LACMA, Hammer Museum, UCLA, Art & Healing Initiative, The Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles, P.S. Arts, and Film Independent.

In addition to workshops, each day included an engaging panel discussion. The first day focused on career trends in the creator economy and the next illustrated ways to utilize the arts to integrate mental health and wellness in the classroom.

The theme of this year’s ArtsMatter Symposium, Art & Science Collide, concentrated on modeling innovative ways to integrate science and art to engage students inspired by Getty’s PST ART: Art & Science Collide initiative. To support teachers as they return to the classroom, ArtsMatter previewed a suite of PST ART Teacher Guides, with step-by-step, standard-aligned creative activities that complement PST ART field trips and Family Days that connect classroom learning to the PST ART exhibitions. The ArtsMatter x PST ART educational initiative will culminate in a K-12 student artwork showcase at the Getty Center in 2025.
